Painting is not about what we see. It is about the several things we explore on the way to seeing them — the hesitations, the corrections, the moment a colour finally agrees with the one beside it.

For Rup Roy, the surface of water is a way into that inner dimension. Lilies float, but so does the light, and so does the memory of every pond that ever taught him to look.
